Apple is shaking up its own computer line by introducing the college-friendly MacBook Neo. First introduced in March, the new MacBook is targeted for students at the low price of $499 through Apple’s “Shop Mac for Education” section and $599 for everyone else.
The MacBook Neo also features a new color lineup. Instead of the typical gray aluminum finishes, the new MacBook includes colors such as pink, yellow and purple, outlining a shift that aligns more with the iPhone and appears aimed at attracting more younger buyers.
The company made several changes in order to reach that lower price tag. The MacBook Neo removes Touch ID by default and uses a more traditional trackpad design. Notably, the MacBook Neo also replaces the M-series chips with processors typically found in iPhones.
Due to these compromises, performance may take a hit, specifically in creative fields.
This shift in the MacBook Neo, though, doesn’t outline what the computer is built for. It’s designed as an entry point into the Apple ecosystem and reliable for everyday tasks like Word processing and spreadsheets.
