The Year of the Horse has arrived.
Chicago’s Chinatown will be holding their annual parade on Sunday, March 1 to ring in the Lunar New Year. Festivities, which are celebrated by many Asian cultures, will last around 15 days. In preparation for the weeks-long events, bright lights and decorations have started to line the neighborhood.
This ancient tradition started in China thousands of years ago and is based on the lunisolar calendar. Each year is assigned to one of 12 animals.
This week’s celebration will not be the first – a parade on Argyle Street where thousands celebrated took place in Uptown on Feb. 21.
During Trump’s “Operation Midway Blitz” campaign in Chicago, immigrant and Asian communities were “on edge” as federal immigration agents swept through city neighborhoods. Though the campaign has waned in recent months, this parade is an opportunity for these communities to come together and celebrate their culture.
The parade will start on Wentworth Avenue and 24th Street at 1pm on Sunday, March 1.
