Columbia is working to address a housing shortage that left more than 200 students on a waitlist.

Senior Vice President of Enrollment Strategy and Student Success Emmanuel Lalande told the Columbia Chronicle that the college is securing additional housing to ensure all students who applied will have a place to live for the 2026–27 academic year.

“Any continuing or new student in need of housing will be accommodated,” Lalande said.

The waitlist, which affects between 220 and 240 returning students, formed after on-campus housing filled within two days of room selection opening.

College officials said they anticipated the demand and began negotiating short-term leases in January to avoid unused housing inventory.

Currently, Columbia offers two primary residence options: 30 East Balbo and the University Center on South State Street, which it shares with DePaul University and Roosevelt University.

Earlier this year, the college chose not to renew leases with Dwight Lofts and The Arc at Old Colony, citing financial concerns and declining enrollment.

Now, nearby private developments, including 626 on the Park, may help meet student demand.

Some students say the process has been frustrating. Sophomore Ladawn Gordon said housing was already full by the time her selection slot opened, forcing her to sign an independent lease.

College leadership acknowledged those concerns.

“I think we could do better with the language,” Lalande said.

The college expects an increase in incoming students this fall and has reserved 40% of available beds for new applicants. Officials said more details on additional housing options and room assignments are expected in the coming week.
