Early voting opened downtown on Feb. 12, with primary voting scheduled to open on March 17 in Illinois.

In March 2024, primary voting in Chicago had a low turnout, and 20% of registered voters cast ballots, with only 3% of voters coming from the age group of 17-24. Students at Columbia believe that if change is to happen, voting is a key factor.

“I’m a firm believer, you have to vote,” Brannon Hancock, a senior film and television major, told South Loop TV.

After Republicans won the Senate, House of Representatives and White House in 2024, Democrats are looking to regain control.

There are three candidates looking for the democratic nomination: Raja Krishnamoorthi, Robin Kelly, and Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton.

The closest polling place to Columbia’s campus is Jones College Prep, which will be open on election day.
