AI is not just being used for funny cat videos or cryptocurrency ads anymore. Some companies are now using it to decide how much to charge customers, coming to be known as “dynamic pricing.”
AI can look at what you buy and how you shop to figure out the price you are likely to pay. PlayStation recently started employing this, and some users noticed the same game could cost different amounts on different accounts.
For example, one Reddit user found that “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” was almost 40% cheaper on his girlfriend’s account than on his own.
Dynamic pricing can sometimes give discounts to people who have not bought in a while, but some users worry it could also charge loyal customers more. This is especially a concern for popular games like “God of War” or “The Last of Us” and for subscriptions like PlayStation Plus.
The system has grown from about 50 games in 30 regions to more than 190 games in 70 regions this year.
Other companies like Wendy’s are also using dynamic pricing, giving lower prices during slow times and higher prices when it is busy.
For now, most companies are not using dynamic pricing, but many users are worried about whether it is fair.
