The Efroymson Creative Writing and Reading Series, hosted by the School of Communication and Culture at Columbia, is being held at The Hive, and brings together award-winning fiction writers, poets and nonfiction authors who share their work and engage with audiences on a wide range of topics.

Chicago house music is celebrating 40 years of music, dance and culture this year, a milestone that reflects the genre’s deep roots in the city’s underground scene. Writer and poet Marguerite L. Harrold revisits that history in her book “Chicago House Music: Culture and Community,” which explores how the genre grew from Chicago’s Black and queer nightlife into an international sound.

This week’s event also featured writer Hafizah Geter, who read from her poetic memoir “The Black Period: On Personhood, Race, and Origin.” Guests read excerpts from their books and discussed their work with attendees, giving students and community members the opportunity to hear directly from acclaimed authors.

Organizers say the Efroymson series is one of Chicago’s most dynamic literary events, regularly bringing diverse voices and creative perspectives to campus. The program continues at The Hive throughout the month, with additional readings and discussions planned for students and the public.
