Construction started on the third phase of a mixed-income redevelopment of the former Harold Ickes Homes complex in the South Loop last week, first reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.

The development, known as Southbridge 1C, which is the third phase of the larger Southbridge project, seeks to add a new 12-story building that will include 80 apartments and 1,500 square feet of ground-floor retail. Construction is expected to finish in June 2027.

The first two phases of Southbridge completed in 2021.

The new apartments will offer sweeping views of Downtown and offer a wide variety of amenities, including in-unit laundry, quartz countertops, a rooftop lounge, a dog wash, resident storage and a gym.

When finished, Southbridge will have more than 800 mixed-income housing units and 65,000 square feet of commercial and community space. Currently, Southbridge has just over 200 total units.
